For 3 weeks in January we are focusing on topical issues that come out of the first few chapters in the bible, Genesis 1-3. Each meeting will have a talk on the topic and then plenty of time given over to questions sent in via text during the meeting. Here is a brief summary of what’s coming up…
Jan 17 The Beginning of Everything
Guest Speaker Phil Moore on Darwin, Dawkins and the creation / evolution debate. How should Christians understand the beginning of the world?
Jan 24 The Beginning of Ethics
Stu Gibbs on some of the implications of being made in the image of God. How should this affect our thinking on issues such as abortion, euthanasia, human rights etc?
Jan 31 The Beginning of Sex
Stu Gibbs on the bible’s teaching on sexuality. What does the bible teach about who we should have sex with and when we should have it?
I preached on singleness on Sunday and touched on a number of different challenges and opportunities that many single people face.
There are several books around but the one I have heard the most positive feedback on is ‘The single issue’ by Al Hsu.
If you are looking for some free internet reading I would recommend the chapter on sex and the single woman in sex and the supremacy of Christ. There is a chapter on ’sex and the single man as well but I didn’t think it was that good.
A number of people asked me about the book I quoted from about Amy Carmichael. It’s called ‘From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya’ by Ruth Tucker and is a massive collection of short biographies of missionaries that span the ages. It’s well written, easy to read, inspiring and challenging. Each person gets about 5 or 6 pages so you get the basic story of what they did without having to wade through a whole book. You can get a preview on google books but its worth buying the real thing.
Today we heard the long awaited sermon from Stu Gibbs on Singleness from 1 Corinthians 7. Click on the links below for the MP3 and powerpoint.
The Notes
This week Stu spoke to us from 1 Corinthians 7 about marriage and our very own 7-7! Click on the links below for the podcast and or the notes…
This week’s sermon was on the importance of marriage and how to strengthen your marriage. I brought the 7:7 challenge to each married coupIe, which was for husbands to plan a 7 day period and devote themselves to spiritual leadership in their home, especially prayer. And for wives to plan a 7 day period to devote themselves to sex in the marriage. This was based on my observations over the years that husbands would often like to have more sex and wives would often like to be led into prayer more. It’s about learning to excel in serving your spouse’s marital needs. I only just discovered that the national marriage week starts on Saturday - good timing eh?
There are a number of good books around on marriage so i am going to point you in the direction of some free resources that are online…
A great book to read is CJ Mahaney’s ‘Sex, romance and the glory of God’. Some of the material can be found in a talk he does for husbands and there is an equivalent talk done for wives by his wife, Carolyn.
The Song of Songs is a book in the bible all about romance and sex. You can read it together, or listen to some sermons online from Mars Hill Church in Seattle.
The Marriage Course, run at Holy Trinity Brompton is a great way to invest in your marriage. It costs £85 but you get a good meal each week in the price and it’s all very nicely done. The summer course starts in April so now is the time to book it in your diaries.
Steve Tibbert, who leads a church over in Catford has written an interesting article on sex and marriage for leaders over on his blog.
That should keep you busy for a while!
Next Sunday we have a visit from Pete Cornford who planted and leads a church over in West London, then we return to the ‘Sex on Sundays’ series with a look at singleness.
Welcome to the first of many posts. The main point of this section of the website is to direct you to material on the web or elsewhere that will help you as you study the bible and learn to follow Jesus. I will try and put something up after most sermons for further reading / listening and may occasionally add in other stuff as well…
Last Sunday I spoke on sexual immorality from 1 Corinthians 6:9-20. If you are a guy struggling to remain sexually pure I recommend Mark Driscoll’s free online Porn again Christian booklet for more teaching on the issues that guys are facing.
Another helpful resource on the whole area for men and women is PJ Smythe’s Relationships and Sexuality book, also free online.
If you are after some more sermons, a guy Josh Harris did a preaching series on purity a few years ago. I have never heard them, but I’m sure they are good!
If you are after some serious reading on sex / marriage / relationships, go for sex and the supremacy of Christ (Edited by John Piper) which is free online or downloadable as the original sermons that inspired the book.
Today Stu Gibbs spoke to us about Sexual Immorality from 1 Corinthians 6 verses 9-20. Download the powerpoint for notes on the sermon.
